Where History Meets Flavorful Dining
Located in Stockton, New York—once known as Delanti—the town as renamed in honor of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In its early days, Stockton was a vibrant agricultural and forestry hub with ambitions of becoming the county seat.
In 1812, Abel Thompson arrived in Stockton and purchased 178 acres of land, which now includes the site of the present-day Stockton Hotel. He initially built a log tavern, which he later replaced with a framed structure. Tragically, that building was lost to fire in 1864. Remarkably, parts of the original foundation still support the hotel that stands today.
After Thompson sold the tavern, it was acquired by Samuel M. Crissey, who renamed it the Crissey House. Later, Levi C. Miller took ownership and repurposed the original structure as a barn and livery stable. In 1899, he constructed a new hotel—the Miller House—featuring twelve guest rooms, a parlor, a dining room, and a kitchen. Guests were brought in by horse-drawn carriage from nearby Cassadaga, and old photographs still show the carriage step used to keep passengers out of the muddy streets.
At its peak, the area around the hotel buzzed with activity. Across the street, small businesses flourished, including a general store, post office, ice cream parlor, and barber shop. From 1898 to 1966, Stockton became renowned for its annual town picnic, drawing crowds of up to 5,000 people.
Today, Stockton is part of New York’s second-largest snowmobile trail system, attracting around 15,000 visitors during favorable snow seasons. The town also welcomes tourists from Lily Dale—Western New York’s renowned center for mediumship and spiritual healing—as well as local RV campgrounds, the Chautauqua Institution, motorcycle clubs and hunters from across the region.
While the Stockton Hotel no longer operates as a traditional inn, it remains a cornerstone of community life. The second floor is available for event rentals, including weddings, bridal and baby showers, memorial services, and more. The hotel also offers live entertainment such as small bands, karaoke nights, and comedy shows. Guests can enjoy special holiday menus and daily food specials, all shared regularly on the hotel’s Facebook page
